Although forts are common historical structures in the country, tourists on e-tourist visas are highly attracted to Chittorgarh Fort in Rajasthan.
Chittorgarh Fort is one of the largest forts in India and Asia, spread over an area of 691.9 hectares. Its location on a hill 180 meters (590.6 ft) high gave it a military advantage.
It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, like the other five forts of Rajasthan. The castle is home to many stories and legends and is naturally one of the most famous.
Architects and historians from around the world have shown interest in the castle’s architecture and the artefacts within its walls.
History of Chittorgarh Fort
Chittorgarh Fort has a rich history and while some stories are glorified, others are not. As for who built it, it is believed to be the work of a local Maurya Rajput ruler. But some myths and theories also say otherwise.
The fort has witnessed numerous wars and long sieges, the first of which took place in 1303 between Rana Ratan Singh and Alauddin Khilji.
The latter won, and after defeating the Rajputs, his son succeeded him. But since then, many rulers of different dynasties have ruled Chittorgarh.
The ruler had to fight against outside forces to maintain control, and history also shows that there was unrest among the brothers because of this.
Although the Rajputs at home were not always successful in repelling the invaders, this in no way diminished their courage and bravery. After a final siege in 1567 and a treaty in 1616, it was restored by the British in 1905.
